Diet During Pregnancy

Some women think that the moment they get pregnant they can start eating for two. You know what that means! Tons of ice cream, McDonald’s at midnight, and pizza for breakfast. However, this is just the opposite of what pregnant women should be eating. In fact, mothers only need to add a mere three hundred calories to their diet. Although cravings are quite common, it is essential to eat moderately and healthily; and keep the occasional McDonald’s for the weekends.

Women need to take in many vitamins while they are pregnant. Most diets should include a lot of vitamin B and C, along with large quantities of fibre. While carbohydrates are great on a moderate level, large portions of green vegetables should be consumed to help maintain a healthy weight level and also help with your baby's growth. Calcium is also very important at this stage. Mothers who are expecting should also take dairy products because it actually plays a large role in the development of their child's bones.

Most dieticians will tell pregnant women to have at least three servings of protein and meat a day. However, it is important to avoid a lot of fat in foods. Two servings of fruit, six glasses of water, and six servings of dairy are the daily minimum amount! It is also recommended that you avoid sodas. Drinks containing a lot of sugar will add a lot of empty calories into your diet - of course you do not want to spoil extra calories on a lousy drink!

While many pregnant mothers feel that it is a great time to be diet-free and eat everything they never normally eat before, it only makes matters worse. Nine months down the road, they will hate their looks and will want to banish chocolate cake and fast food forever. Of course it is encouraged to listen to your sweet tooth and cravings every now and then, but it also is smart to keep this to only occasional. If you exercise daily and eat healthily on a moderate level, you will be thanking your good judgement and control nine months later. While other mothers are still in their maternity wear, you will be back on the beach in no time - feeling better than ever. One good online resource about health in general is the Health Manual.

On the other hand, while it may be tempting to some women to start their diet early and seriously cut back on calories while pregnant, it can be very dangerous for both themselves and their child. If you are body conscious, try eating small meals throughout the day. Skipping meals will only prevent crucial nutrients for your baby. Also, satisfy your cravings with vegetables or crackers. This will help with morning sickness and also help maintain a healthy pregnancy weight.
